Abstract
Our understanding of assessment with African American children has improved considerably in the last decade, yet there is still much to be learned. As we work to improve our knowledge base it seems important to pause a moment and consider what we know about this population and their dialectal variations in the larger context of child language impairment. We should be moving toward synthesis and integration of both our unique knowledge of this population and our shared understanding of language disorders in children.
