Abstract
Nonmainstream dialect use varies greatly across individuals even when those individuals live in the same community and in the same family. Therefore, when research participants include speakers of a nonmainstream dialect(s), it is critical to describe the type and rate of their nonmainstream pattern use. This presentation examines different methods for characterizing the dialect of research participants using two child data sets (one urban and one rural) from Louisiana. Recommendations for choosing the right method for one’s research will be offered.
