|
Clinicians and researchers alike use standardized tests, parent-report inventories and language sample analyses to quantify children’s lexical knowledge. However, the lexicon is not a static collection of knowledge but a system that emerges from interactions among and between knowledge, context, and processing demands in real time. Aiding investigation of real time lexical processing are methods such as priming and lexical decision tasks as well as technologies such as eye tracking and event-related potentials. The qualitative aspects of lexical semantic knowledge may be studied via analysis of drawings, definitions, task of best performance, and gesture-speech mismatch. One example of real-time measurement and one example of qualitative analysis will be presented with supporting data. |
