Abstract
Since its inception with the study of Adam, Eve, and Sara, the Mean Length of Utterance in morphemes has served as the basic metric for syntactic development. This presentation will consider the problem of syntactic assessment from a 21st century perspective. MLU in morphemes, as well as various alternatives, will be considered as means of indexing grammatical level. In addition, the issues involved in assessing syntax, primarily in spontaneous speech contexts, will be examined at both preschool and school-age developmental levels. . “Shortcuts” and ways of increasing the efficiency of free speech sampling and analysis will be discussed. The contributions of several computer-assisted analysis tools, including SALT, Computerized Profiling, and the CHILDES data system will be addressed. The choice of particular aspects of syntax that can be used both in identifying language disorders and developing intervention programs will be reviewed. A suggested menu of efficient and effective approaches to developing indepth profiles of syntactic skills and needs in preschool and school-aged children will be presented.
