This study documents the use of noun phrase morphology in a group of Spanish-speaking preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI). Relative to both same-age peers and younger typically developing children with similar mean length of utterance (MLU), the children with SLI demonstrated significantly less accuracy in the production of articles, direct object clitics, and noun plural inflections. For both articles and direct object clitics, plural forms were less accurate than singular forms for the children with SLI, a difference that was not seen for the typically developing groups. Errors involved both omissions and substitutions involving a single feature (e.g., feminine singular articles replacing feminine plural articles). These findings suggest that in certain Romance languages, noun phrase morphology may constitute an area of grammar that warrants particular attention. The theoretical and clinical implications of the findings are discussed.
