    Coding Language Samples with Transcription and Direct Video Coding: A Comparison of Efficiency and Reliability

Observational methods used to analyze language samples are time-intensive. Direct video coding is a promising alternative. Twenty parents and their four-year-olds were video-recorded during shared book reading and retelling the story 24 hours later. The 40 videos were coded for parent scaffolding (10 codes) using transcription and video coding. The duration of time to code was recorded. Direct video coding took significantly less time and both methods achieved good inter-rater reliability; however, reliability between methods was low. The differences were attributable to medium. Visual, pragmatic, and prosodic cues influenced both the parsing and the coding. Researchers and clinicians should conduct a trial sample of data to compare systems for their benefits and limitations of use.
