    “I don't have much time to go out and find someone else” – A qualitative study of the social support strategies of young adult college students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

Our previous research showed that the academic strategies of young adult college students with DLD were often interpersonally motivated. In this study, we examined data from semi-structured qualitative interviews with thirteen students and other sources to investigate in further detail where, how and why students requested social support to aid in studying.

All students described at least some social support. Strategies fell into three groups: 1. studying alone while asking someone to proofread work, 2. making bids for formal or 3. informal support. Targets of support bids were grouped into categories (e.g., peers, relatives). Categories varied by emotional valence, with more formal support perceived more negatively. Students prioritized physical proximity and disability-inclusiveness over academic expertise when seeking help, due to disability-related time pressures and a motivation to avoid discrimination; but they often noted the consequentially lacking academic aspects. We discuss implications for campus services.
