    Assessing Vocal Development in Children who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing: The Assessment Purposes of Speech-Language Pathologists

Inconsistencies between evidence-based assessment practice and reports of how SLPs use norm-referenced assessments are well documented. It has recently been proposed that integrating the perspectives of SLPs into norm-referenced assessment development is one way to tailor assessments to SLPs clinical context and consequently improve evidence-based practices.
The current study documents the assessment purposes of speech-language pathologists practicing in a Canadian Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program. Specifically, we were interested in vocal assessment purposes of children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing (CDHH), younger than 21 months. N=57 speech-language pathologists completed the survey. SLPs rated the importance of 15 assessment purposes (e.g., goal setting; differential diagnosis) on a 1-7 Likert scale, and selected the five most important purposes to their clinical practice. All assessment purposes were rated as important, and the five most important purposes included selecting therapy goals and determining whether a child was performing within age expectations. These purposes can be used to design new, and evaluate existing, clinically feasible vocal development assessments.
