    Using Latent Semantic Analysis to Asses the Semantic Content of Narratives from Children with Typical and Atypical Language Development

In this study we used Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), which is a method to extract semantic relations between words from texts, to compare narratives produced by a combined clinical (atypical) group of 73 children with language impairment or hearing impairment and a typical group of 108 controls with normal hearing and typical language development. The children in the typical group produced narratives consisting of more and longer words and LSA rated the children in the typical group as older, and more often as girls than the atypical group. The typical group also used significantly more words with positive value and more words expressing high intelligence, but fewer words expressing dominance. Thus, LSA holds promise as a tool for assessing the semantic contents and quality of narratives when comparing typical with atypical groups and could therefore possibly be used as a diagnostic tool.
