Abstract
This study aims to contribute to our understanding of conversational skills in a group at risk for problems with communication, adolescents with cochlear implants (CI). Responses to requests for clarification in a referential communication task were studied in dialogues between adolescents with CI and a hearing peer and in dialogues between two hearing adolescents. Responses were analysed with respect to length (in words), type (confirmation or elaboration) and to whether they conformed to the type of question. No significant group differences were found regarding length, distribution of type of response or type-conformity. There was a strong tendency in all participants to provide more information than requested, elaborating in response to a request for confirmation. The participants with CI thus contributed as actively as their hearing peers, sharing the responsibility for the construction of the dialogue, at least in this specific context. The task could be used in intervention to make adolescents with CI conscious of how to use question and response strategies to manage interaction.
