Abstract
We introduce methods to investigate cross-linguistic as well as bilingual utterances in preschool children learning Hmong (L1) and English (L2), using the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT; Miller & Chapman, 1998). In the cross-linguistic analyses, only utterances in the target language (Hmong or English) are coded, scored and analyzed. In contrast, in the bilingual analyses, insertions from the non-target language (e.g., English words occurring in the Hmong sample) are also credited and analyzed. These cross-linguistic and bilingual adapted-SALT analyses were then used to investigate language samples elicited during a story retell task. Participants were 18 children (3;11-5;0) who spoke Hmong as their primary home language and attended a bilingual (Hmong-English) preschool. The cross-linguistic comparison revealed comparable number of utterances produced in each language, although lexical diversity measures favored Hmong. The bilingual analysis revealed a significantly greater percentage of Hmong (L1) insertions in the English sample. Factors affecting cross-language insertions are investigated and discussed.
